Serum zinc levels may fall to abnormally low levels. However, the combination of mild thrombocytopenia from hypesplenism and low coagulation factors and platelet dysfunction from liver disease may cause or aggravate bleeding. Fructosamine is a substance created when a type of sugar in the blood, called glucose, binds to other substances called proteins. The fructosamine test is one way to estimate the amount of glucose in the blood of people with diabetes. If you have diabetes, your doctor may order a fructosamine test to get a sense of how well your glucose levels have been managed in the last few weeks. Testing fructosamine requires a blood sample that is collected from a vein. Numerous laboratory abnormalities reflect the accumulation of excessive iron and the consequences of iron-induced organ damage, and they are described in the following sections.
